Experience an extraordinary 3-day journey to Manu, a cultural and nature-filled adventure that takes you deep into the heart of the Amazon rainforest, where breathtaking landscapes and incredible biodiversity await.

Our adventure begins with a visit to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo, where we will appreciate its cultural richness and the diverse flora and fauna of the region. From there, we continue descending into the lush rainforest, passing through spectacular Andean–Amazonian scenery until we reach Pilcopata. We will stay at a cozy, traditional lodge surrounded by nature, offering comfortable rooms with private bathrooms and mosquito nets to ensure a pleasant and restful stay.

On the second day, after a delicious breakfast, we travel by road to Puerto Atalaya, where we board a motorized boat and navigate along the river toward Paititi Lodge. During the journey, you will have the opportunity to spot monkeys, colorful birds, and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The river ride, surrounded by dense rainforest vegetation, is truly unforgettable. We will spend the night at the lodge, immersed in the magical sounds of the jungle.

On the third day, we rise early to visit the impressive parrot clay lick, a fascinating natural spectacle where dozens of parrots and other birds gather on the clay walls, creating a vibrant display of color and life. Afterwards, we return by boat to Pilcopata and begin our journey back to Cusco, concluding an authentic and enriching experience in the heart of Manu.

Itinerary

To begin our exciting 3-day Manu adventure, we will pick you up early in the morning between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. from your hotel in our comfortable and modern private vehicle.

During the journey, we will visit the impressive Chullpas de Ninamarca, ancient funerary towers located at 3,750 meters (12,303 ft) above sea level, where we will learn about the region’s pre-Inca history. We will then make a brief stop in the charming folkloric town of Paucartambo, well known for its rich cultural traditions and iconic colonial bridge.

Afterwards, we will continue ascending toward the upper area of Paucartambo, reaching the Acjanaco sector at 4,000 meters (13,123 ft) above sea level. This point marks the official entrance to the majestic Manu National Park.

From here, we begin our descent through the mysterious cloud forest, a unique ecosystem that hosts an extraordinary diversity of flora and wildlife. Along the way, you will observe beautiful orchids, vibrant heliconias, and ancient ferns. During a guided walk, you will have the opportunity to witness the spectacular mating ritual of the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana), Peru’s national bird.

You may also spot various bird species such as trogons (Trogon sp.), quetzals (Pharomachrus sp.), and, with a bit of luck, even the elusive Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus).

In the afternoon, we will arrive at the picturesque town of Pilcopata, located at 550 meters (1,804 ft) above sea level, where our cozy traditional lodge awaits. Surrounded by nature and set away from the town, the lodge offers comfortable rooms with private bathrooms and hot showers, ensuring a pleasant and relaxing stay in the heart of the jungle.

After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we will continue our journey by road to Puerto Atalaya, a 45-minute drive that takes us to an altitude of 490 meters (1,608 ft) above sea level.

In Atalaya, we will board a boat for a 30-minute river ride through the lush Amazonian landscape, arriving at the cozy Paititi Lodge. During the boat trip, we will have excellent opportunities to observe a variety of animals in their natural habitat while enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the jungle.

Upon arrival at the lodge, we will settle into comfortable rooms with private bathrooms and showers, perfect for relaxing in the heart of nature. After a delicious lunch, in the afternoon we will visit the beautiful Cocha Machuwasi, a serene oxbow lake surrounded by rich biodiversity.

There, we will enjoy a ride on a traditional local catamaran, giving us the chance to observe a wide variety of birds, including the unique hoatzin (Ophisthocomus hoazin), as well as monkeys, reptiles, dwarf caimans, and countless insects. With some luck, we may also spot capybaras (Hydrochaerus hydrochaeris), the largest rodents in the world.

In the evening, for those seeking an extra thrill, an optional night trek is available, allowing participants to explore the jungle after dark and discover nocturnal wildlife.

Finally, we will return to the lodge to rest comfortably, enjoying private bathrooms and showers in a peaceful setting, surrounded by the magical sounds of the Amazon rainforest.

On the final day of our 3-day Manu tour, we will wake up early for an exciting 45-minute boat ride to the parrot clay lick, a mineral-rich clay wall. Here, we will witness the incredible natural spectacle of 3 to 4 species of green parrots gathering in large numbers to feed on the natural salts and minerals—a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

After enjoying this fascinating wildlife encounter, we will return to the lodge for a delicious breakfast before continuing our journey. We will leave the boat at Atalaya and proceed by bus, passing once again through Pilcopata (550 meters / 1,804 ft above sea level), Patria, and Chontachaca, while crossing the mysterious cloud forest once more, marveling at its stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity.

During the drive, we will have additional opportunities to admire the flora and fauna of the cloud forest, closing our adventure with unforgettable memories of the Amazon rainforest. We expect to arrive in Cusco between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., concluding our remarkable Manu journey.

Recommendations

To make the most of your adventure in Manu, we recommend bringing warm clothing for the chilly mornings by the river, as well as a raincoat or waterproof gear, since the weather can be unpredictable. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle, binoculars to observe the incredible wildlife, sunscreen, a flashlight or torch with spare batteries, and a hat or cap to protect yourself from the sun.

It is important to wear comfortable and appropriate clothing for the jungle, such as long-sleeved shirts and long pants, along with insect repellent containing at least 10% DEET. We also recommend bringing sandals, swimwear, and a towel for aquatic activities.

Remember to bring any personal medications, hygiene items (including toilet paper), and some extra cash for additional expenses. By following these recommendations, your trip will be more comfortable, safe, and full of unforgettable experiences in the Manu rainforest.
